From the 1st of July onwards, interest-free loans of up to $8,800 for each Victorian household will be available for eligible applicants through the Solar Homes Program. You can also check for any solar battery rebate on the Solar Victoria website.
What size of solar battery do you need?
We are often asked this question, for a general overview on the battery size, if you already
have a 5kW system, or are looking to purchase one, you’ll likely need a battery with at least 10kWh capacity, more likely, up to 13.5 kWh.
A 5kW solar power system typically produces anywhere between 17 – 21 kWh per day depending on where you live in Australia. For most consumers, around two-thirds of a system’s production is fed back into the grid, which is around 13 kWh per day.
This 13kWh could instead be used to store your solar power in a battery.
If you use around 50% of your power during daytime which is when your solar system produces electricity, around half the production will be sent back to the grid, with that you could charge a slightly smaller size battery, like 10 kWh.

As of the 1st of July 2023, as a Victorian householder, you can only receive solar battery interest free loan if you meet the following criteria:
• you are the owner-occupier of an existing property where the system is to be installed
• the combined household taxable income of all owners is less than $180,000 per year
• you have not already received any rebate under the Solar Homes Program
• the property is valued at under $3 million
• the property already has a solar panel system with a capacity equal to or greater than 5kW or you are arranging to have one installed in conjunction with the solar battery installation
